Providence PArk Proposal
Huntsville, Alabama
This design proposes to introduce new residences and public amenities to an existing park in the DPZ-designed New Urbanist community of Providence, Alabama. The new building, replacing an unsightly surface parking lot and wrapping and concealing new structured parking, presents as four distinct components, each with its own architectural expression and palette of materials. Facing the park, a pavilion topped with an iconic central clock tower offers a café on the ground floor and a second-floor restaurant with a porch overlooking the view. A six-story block houses residences that look into an internal courtyard atop the parking structure as well as out across the town. Wings accommodate street-facing shops. Enhancements to the park include new plantings, new paths, and a new fountain, as well as perimeter fencing with gateway entries and corner columns.
